Webinar 66. “Endgame Fundamentals”

Dear Chess Friends!

How often do you pass the game into the endgame? I have to play the endgame in 70% of all my games. In other 30%, I finish the game in the middlegame with a tactical combination or a strong attack and gain extra material.

Do you know how to play the endgames properly? When teaching my students, I faced that many of them don’t understand the principles of playing endgames and that’s why they choose wrong directions for future actions. For example, a kingside attack instead of attacking weakness or activation of their pieces. That’s why I decided to conduct a general webinar devoted to how to play endgames.

At this webinar I covered 5 different types of Endgames and explained which factor to take into account and which plans to follow in each case.

Pawn Endgames

Principles to follow:

•       Centralize the king

•       Create a distant (or protected) passed pawn

•       Obtain an opposition

•       Always keep in mind a Zugzwang

•       Triangulation, Mined Squares and etc.

Knight Endgames

Principles to follow:

•       Fix enemy pawn weaknesses and attack them with your knight

•       Activate your king

•       Knight endgames are similar to pawn endgames

•       Create passed pawns

•       Flank pawns are strong against the knights

Bishop Endgames

Principles to follow:

•       In case of opposite-colored bishop endgame locate your pawns on the squares of your bishop

•       Centralize your king

•       Always remember about good and bad bishops

•       Fix enemy pawn weaknesses and attack them

•       Create passed pawns and support them with the king

•       Prevent counterplay

•       Remember about Triangulation and Opposition

Knight vs Bishop

Rook Endgames

Principles to follow:

•       Cut the enemy king off

•       Activate your king

•       Attack your opponent’s weak pawns

•       Create passed pawn and support it from behind with your rook

•       Attack enemy passed pawns from behind

•       Activity is better than material

•       Prevent counterplay

•       Know precise positions (Philidor, Lucena) and typical maneuvers (Bridge)

•       Don’t trade rooks if you are playing for a draw

Queen Endgames

Principles to follow:

•       Learn Staircase Maneuver and remember about cross-check

•       Locate your queen actively

•       Keep your king safe (or move it towards weak pawns or squares)

•       Create distant passed pawn and support it with your queen

•       Keep in mind queens exchange as a way to realize your advantage in pawn endgame

•       If you are playing for a draw, look for a perpetual check (weaken enemy king position)
