How to Beat Sicilian Defense with Alapin Variation (VIDEO+PGN)

Alapin Variation is a good Anti-Sicilian opening that can help you to score more points against Sicilian and at the same time doesn't require much knowledge!

What is Alapin Variation?

1. e4 c5 2. c3

In this position black has 2 good options: 2… Nf6 & 2… d5. All other deviations don’t deserve attention and/or can be analyzed by yourself.

If 2… Nf6 I suggest to play 3. e5 Nd5 4. d4 cxd4 5. cxd4 d6 6. Nf3 Nc6 7. Bc4

After this move black has 3 options 7… Nb6, 7… e6 & 7…dxe5. I’m going to show how to get the advantage (or at least obtain good play) in all these 3 lines.

If 2... d5 (what, in my opinion, is stronger) – we take the pawn 3. exd5 Qxd5 4. d4

Here black has 2 common plans: first – with Nc6 & Bg4 and second with e6 & Nf6. Anyway, I’m going to teach you how to play in these variations.
